Welcome to my
Commonplace Book!

In the late Middle Ages, scholars started using “Commonplace Books” to collect knowledge of all kinds. These were not journals, but more like scrapbooks to gather quotes, letters, scientific formulae, and personal thoughts. Famous commonplace books were maintained by Thomas Jefferson, Francis Bacon, Henry David Thoreau, and Mark Twain. Sherlock Holmes himself solved a number of crimes by referencing his commonplace books!

This website isn't so much a blog as my own digital commonplace book where I keep items of personal interest.

I hope you enjoy it!

Heroism on Record: Ensign Allen Flory, USNR

Heroism on Record: Ensign Allen Flory, USNR

Ensign Allen Flory, USNR, of Bangor PA participated in Naval Aviation operations aboard USS Marcus Island in the Pacific from 1944-45.  While the awards do not mention his specific aircraft, I believe he flew Grumman FM-2 Wildcats based on what VC-21 was flying at the time.

These awards were on file at Shirt’s Barber Shop in Bangor PA.
