Welcome to my
Commonplace Book!

In the late Middle Ages, scholars started using “Commonplace Books” to collect knowledge of all kinds. These were not journals, but more like scrapbooks to gather quotes, letters, scientific formulae, and personal thoughts. Famous commonplace books were maintained by Thomas Jefferson, Francis Bacon, Henry David Thoreau, and Mark Twain. Sherlock Holmes himself solved a number of crimes by referencing his commonplace books!

This website isn't so much a blog as my own digital commonplace book where I keep items of personal interest.

I hope you enjoy it!

Doesn't Everyone Have a Grave Digger in the Family?!?

Doesn't Everyone Have a Grave Digger in the Family?!?

I recently discovered that my great grandfather was a grave digger and cemetery caretaker at Our Lady of Hungary in Northampton PA in the early 1900s.

Vinzent Szelthoffer, Sr, was born in Bakonybel, Hungary in 1872. He and his bride, Roszalia, emigrated to the United States ~1900.

They had nine children, the 5th of whom was my mother’s mother.
